The term “benign respiratory disease” refers to diseases other than cancer that affect lungs and breathing. Examples of benign respiratory diseases include asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease.
The benign respiratory disease group also encompasses severe lung or airway complications resulting from cancer and transplantation therapies. Patients coping with these complications may require unique care to restore or rehabilitate their lungs.
UHN’s Benign Respiratory Diseases Care Area
Our programs are geared towards assisting patients whose conditions are at the serious or life-threatening stage. Our goal is to find new ways of treating patients when more common treatments have not been successful. Our team includes multidisciplinary expertise from ENT, Thoracic Surgery, and Respirology. Together, we are making significant progress in benign respiratory disease research and treatment. Our five key areas of focus are:

Upper airway reconstruction – repairing damage due to trauma or cancer |

Lung volume reduction – assisting patients with emphysema |

Pulmonary hypertension program – assisting patients with a rare blood vessel disorder |

Asthma and COPD program – providing diagnosis, patient education, smoking cessation, and respiratory rehabilitation programs as well as outpatient clinics for allergy and occupational lung diseases |

Interstitial lung disease – a combined research and clinical program in treating patients with scarred lung tissue |
