Volunteering at UHN
By joining our team, you can have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and to use your interpersonal and administrative skills in a leading health care facility.
Our greatest need for volunteers occurs during business hours: Monday to Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. Limited opportunities are available evenings and weekends. At UHN, we have over 250 placement areas, generating approximately 160,000 hours on a yearly basis in:
Clinical Support (e.g. Endocrinology, Endoscopy, Medical Imaging, Head and Neck Clinic)
- Greet and welcome patients and visitors
- Assist with various administrative tasks including photocopying, filing, phone calls
- Assisting the public with general inquiries as to location of offices and clinics.
Patient Support (e.g. Patient Visiting, Peter Munk Cardiac Visiting, Healing Beyond the Body)
- Provide diversional activities for patients, (e.g. provide reading material, play cards, board games, puzzles, socialize/talk, read to patients, write letters, arts & crafts).
- Communicate between patients/families and Nursing Staff - inform nursing staff about patients/visitors that wish to talk with medical staff. Keep staff informed of any questions or concerns raised.
Staff/Administrative Support (e.g. Human Resources, Volunteer Resources, Clinical Administration)
- Greet and welcome patients and visitors/employees
- Phoning patients to confirm upcoming appointments
- Filing, faxing and photocopying
- Errands to other departments
- Direct and escort patients and other clients (e.g. family members) to different areas in the hospital.
Waiting Room Support (e.g. Critical Care Units, Emergency Department)
- Greet and welcome visitors.
- Provide diversional activities for families, (e.g. provide reading material, play cards, board games, puzzles, socialize/talk, read to patients, write letters, arts & crafts).
- Assist family members and visitors with general inquiries and way finding.
- Liaise between visitors and medical staff.
- Perform errands for family or visitors if requested (e.g. getting coffee – volunteers are NOT responsible for paying).
Qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Good interpersonal skills, caring and friendly, and able to interact with family and visitors when required.
- Proactive and resourceful.
- Pay attention to detail.
- Must be able to take direction, but also to work independently.
- Reliable and punctual.
