Managing Asthma

Here are the facts about asthma: Asthma Fact Sheet

It is important that all asthmatics and their families understand asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways.

When inflamed and irritable airways are exposed to a trigger such as dust or cold air, the airway muscles go into spasm and airway narrowing results. Therefore, it is helpful to have some knowledge and understanding of asthma triggers, warning signs of worsening asthma, medication, their actions and proper inhalation technique. You should discuss an action plan with your doctor.

Guidelines to follow based on symptoms and/or peak flow monitoring

This is a series of guidelines to follow based on symptoms and/or peak flow monitoring. If your asthma symptoms worsen, you will know just what steps you can take yourself to establish control again. This requires a written action plan, agreed to by you and your doctor ahead of time. Early treatment can be started even if your doctor is unavailable and may prevent severe asthma attacks and hospital admissions.
