The UHN Comprehensive Wharton Head and Neck Program (WHNP) is seen as the top head and neck treatment centre in Canada.

The services of the WHNP are mainly for people of Metropolitan Toronto and its nearby communities including Durham and Peel.  The program is unique because it is one of only two providers of treatment for patients with head and neck cancer within the region.  Right now, the program and its healthcare providers care for about 80% of all head and neck patients within this area.

Most of the patients we see are adults aged 50 years and older.  The majority of patients are males because of some of the risk factors that predispose patients to head and neck cancers (i.e. smoking and drinking).  More and more female patients are developing head and neck cancers largely because of an increase in smoking.

The Wharton Head and Neck program is made up of an integrated team that crosses not only disciplinary boundaries, but a broad range of specialties as well.  Patients receive care from a team of surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, nurses and allied health professionals, while an electronic patient chart records all information relevant to diagnosis and treatment in one place.

The Head and Neck Program focuses on cancers affecting:
Lip and Mouth
Larynx
Pharynx (nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx)
Salivary Glands
Nasal Cavities and Sinuses
Thyroid and Upper Trachea

The program provides the following services to patients:

Primary Prevention and Screening

Assessment- Multidisciplinary Team Assessment, Diagnostic Imaging, Biopsy and Pathology Review
Treatment- Surgery, Radiation and Chemotherapy
Supportive Care, Palliative and Pain Services
Follow-Up
