Accountability to Our Patients

Infection Control and You: Tracking Infection Rates in the hospital

At the University Health Network (UHN), we are continuing in our commitment to provide the safest and highest level of health care to our patients. As one of the first hospitals in Canada to publicly post our rates for common hospital-acquired infections - Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE) - we believe transparency and accountability are both key in order to earn our patients valued trust.

As of April 30, 2009 UHN will publicly post our quarterly rates of Central Line-Associated primary blood stream infection (CLI), Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) and the quarterly percentage of Surgical Site Infection- preventions for hip and knee replacement surgeries.  Additionally, UHN will post the annual rate of compliance with hand hygiene (hand washing).

You can now view and compare the rates for each of these indicators for UHN’s three hospital sites: Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. You may also compare them against other Ontario hospitals by visiting the Ministry of Health’s website at www.health.ontario.ca

You may also learn more about the staff education initiatives currently in place to prevent and control the spread of hospital-acquired infections. UHN is committed to maintaining the highest possible safety standards for you – our patients.

If you have any questions about UHN’s hospital-acquired infection rates or about our infection prevention and control program, please contact our infection prevention and control department at: infectioncontrol@uhn.on.ca
