1. What programs/applications do I need to access the Corporate Intranet?
To view UHN's Corporate Intranet via Remote Access, it is recommended that you use one of the following browsers:

• Internet Explorer 6 or higher (recommended)
• Netscape 6 or higher (recommended)
• Mozilla
• Opera 6 or higher
• Safari (for MAC)

You also need the following plugins and applications to view multimedia presentations, and documents.

• Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 or higher Download now
• Windows Media Player 9.0 Download now
• Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.1 Download now
• Quicktime 6.0 or higher Download now
• Microsoft Word  
• Microsoft Excel  
• Microsoft PowerPoint

2. Why does my connection seem slow?
Connection response time depends on your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and your connection type (high speed or modem). For best results, a high speed connection is recommended (e.g. Bell Sympatico, Rogers).

3. How do I log off?
To log off, click the red "Log Off" button located on the top right-hand corner of the Intranet Web page; then close your Browser window. This ensures that your session has ended securely.

4. What precautions can I take to improve security on my home computer?
To improve security on your home computer:

  • Ensure that you have anti-virus software installed on your home computer. The most popular brands include MacAfee Virus Scan and Norton Antivirus, which can be obtained through any computer or electronics store.
  • Update existing anti-virus software on your home computers with the latest version from the Internet. You will specifically need to update virus “definitions”. Instructions for updates are accessible through the software company’s Web site.
  • Run a full virus scan and then reboot your home computer.
  • Install the latest updates from Microsoft to your home computer’s operating system. You can do this by searching for "Microsoft Windows Update" through your Internet search engine.

5. How do I access UHN's Clinical Desktop (Misys) or get VPN access from home?
To obtain access, log onto the Corporate Intranet, and click on Departments < SIMS < Customer Services < Request Remote Access. Complete the required form(s).

6. Why can't I print from UHN's Clinical Desktop via remote access?
Printing is not supported when accessing UHN's Clinical Desktop via remote access.

7. Why do I have difficulties viewing video and hearing audio from UHN's Clinical Desktop through remote access?
While you can still view video and hear audio, the quality of video and audio is degraded when accessing UHN's Clinical Desktop via remote access.
